wallsend collery disaster 1821 commemoration


Together with the Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn, I unveiled a commemorative plaque, in St Peter’s Church Yard, to mark the 200th anniversary of the Wallsend Colliery Disaster. 52 men and boys, aged 5-77 years, died in the disaster and 46 of them are buried in the church yard. Ward Councillors Linda Bell and Gary Madden, council officers, members of Wallsend History Society and family members of some of those killed, were among those who took part in the dignified and moving event and remembrance
